Introduction to Riverside Photography Competition

Hello!

We are a friendly and enthusiastic team of staff from across the campuses, who want to promote Photography across the Riverside community, by encouraging others to be creative, too. We want as many as possible to have fun and take part in our 2018 competition. Whether you are a keen Instagrammer, smartphone snapper, Photoshop fanatic, digital technology enthusiast, or you simply just want to be creative and take part – we’d appreciate your entries. Along the way, we’ll provide some easy tips for taking a great snap.

Why is Photography important?

“A picture is worth a thousand words…” Creativity, visual literacy and technological awareness are proving to be vital 21st century skills.  Images are powerful: in an instant, photographs help us to communicate ideas, express emotions, record history, document news, and capture special moments. Photographs tell us what’s important to us; they are part of our legacy; and they allow us to share and communicate across language barriers. Read more here. With over 1.8 billion photos uploaded to the internet every day, we live in a world which is increasingly reliant on digital media and strong imagery to sell ideas. So, we want to develop students who are technologically and visually confident, and as part of our Arts for Life ambition, highlight Photography as an accessible and enjoyable art form, for all ages and abilities. It’s never been easier to take a photograph!

As the world of Visual Arts + Design is constantly adapting to innovations and creative advances in technology, so are we, here at Riverside. Our fantastic Arts Centre Gallery has superb capacity for displaying digital art work via the projectors and screens. We’re keen to creatively and artistically explore this through the competition and summer exhibition, as well as using our digital screens at each campus to display your entries throughout the school.
